These Terms and Conditions govern how you may use www.anthologybookshop.co.uk and every purchase you make from Anthology Book Shop.
This website is run and owned by Anthology Book Shop, which trades under the name Anthology Book Shop. Throughout these Terms, “we”, “us” and “our” mean Anthology Book Shop, while “you” and “your” mean the customer or visitor using the website.
You accept these Terms and Conditions whenever you use our website, place an order, open an account, book an event, buy a gift card, join a mailing list or otherwise make use of our services.
1. Who We Are
Anthology Book Shop is an independent bookshop and online bookstore based in the UK. Through our website and, where relevant, our physical shop, pop-ups, events and other sales channels, we sell books, book-related items, gifts, merchandise, event tickets, subscriptions, bundles and other products.
2. Who Can Buy
Products with mature, explicit, dark, erotic or adult themes may only be bought by people aged 18 or over.
Some of the books and products Anthology Book Shop sells may contain adult content, strong language, sexual content, violence, dark themes, trauma themes or other mature material. When you buy a product of this kind, you confirm that you are legally allowed to do so, and that it is up to you to judge whether the content is right for you.
We are entitled to refuse or cancel an order if we reasonably believe that the buyer does not satisfy the relevant age requirement, or that a product is not appropriate to sell to a particular customer.
3. Using the Website
You agree to use our website in a lawful and responsible way. In particular, you must not:
- Use the website for any fraudulent, unlawful or harmful purpose.
- Do anything that interferes with the website’s security, operation or availability.
- Try to gain access to customer accounts, systems or information without permission.
- Copy, scrape, reproduce or exploit our website content commercially without permission.
- Upload or send viruses, malware, spam or other harmful code.
- Give false details when opening an account or placing an order.
If we reasonably believe you have breached these Terms, we may suspend your access to the website or restrict it.
4. Product Details
We try to make sure that product descriptions, prices, images, availability and other details are correct, but mistakes can sometimes happen.
Images of products are there to illustrate only. Unless we say otherwise, the item you receive may differ from the image shown in its cover design, edition, sprayed edges, bonus content, exclusive features, formatting, publisher details, dimensions, colour tones and packaging.
Further terms may apply, as set out on the product page, to products listed as a special edition, signed edition, exclusive edition, pre-order, limited edition, damaged copy, mystery item, subscription item or bundle.
We may fix errors, update product information, change prices, withdraw products or cancel any order affected by an obvious mistake.
5. Prices and Payment
Every price on the website is in pounds sterling.
We can change prices at any time. A change will not alter an order we have already accepted, unless the price was obviously wrong.
You must pay when you place your order, unless we expressly agree something different. We may take payment by debit card, credit card, digital wallet, gift card, store credit or any other method offered at checkout.
We have not accepted your order until we either confirm it by email or send the goods out, whichever comes first. Receiving a payment confirmation does not, on its own, mean that your order has been accepted.
Should your payment be declined, reversed, disputed, charged back or suspected of being fraudulent, we may cancel your order, suspend your account or recover any amount left unpaid.
6. Accepting Your Order
Once you have placed an order you may be sent an acknowledgement. This tells you we have received the order, but it is not a guarantee that we will accept it.
We may refuse, cancel or limit an order in any of these situations:
- The product is out of stock or not available.
- There is an error in the price, stock, description or our systems.
- We have not received payment, or the payment has failed.
- We suspect fraud, misuse, reselling or abuse of discounts.
- Delivery restrictions apply.
- The order includes age-restricted or mature content and we have concerns about whether the buyer is eligible.
- Something outside our reasonable control prevents us from fulfilling the order.
Where we cancel an order after taking payment, we will refund what you paid for the cancelled item.
7. Pre-Orders
Unless we say otherwise, you are charged for a pre-order product when you buy it.
We give release and dispatch dates as estimates in good faith. They may change because of publisher delays, supplier problems, shipping delays, production changes or circumstances beyond our control.
Where one order contains both pre-order and in-stock items, we may keep the whole order back until everything is available, unless we offer split shipping.
Before a pre-order is dispatched you may cancel it, except where the product is personalised, made to order, specially sourced, digital, event-related, or otherwise excluded from cancellation by law or by these Terms.
8. Subscriptions and Recurring Orders
If we offer subscriptions, book boxes, memberships or recurring orders, the terms that apply to that particular subscription will be displayed when you buy.
When you subscribe, you give us or our payment provider authority to collect repeat payments as often as is shown at checkout.
It is your job to keep your payment details, delivery address and account information current.
A subscription can be cancelled by following the cancellation instructions on the website or in your account. Cancelling stops future renewals, but it does not automatically cancel any boxes, items or orders that have already been processed, packed, dispatched or reserved for you.
What a subscription contains may differ from month to month. Unless we expressly confirm otherwise, images, themes and previews are examples only.
9. Delivery
We deliver to the destinations listed at checkout. Before you place your order, you will be shown the delivery options, estimated timescales and charges.
Delivery times are only estimates, and we do not guarantee them unless we expressly say so. We are not responsible for delays arising from postal services, couriers, customs, bad weather, strikes, wrong addresses, missed deliveries or other events beyond our control.
You must give us a complete and correct delivery address. If an order is delayed, lost or sent back because the address you gave was wrong or incomplete, we may charge extra postage to send it out again.
The risk in the goods moves to you when they are delivered to the address you gave us, left in a safe place you asked for, collected by you, or received by someone at the delivery address.
You become the owner of the goods once we have been paid in full.
10. Postage, Packaging and Delivery Charges
At checkout, postage and packaging are worked out from factors including where the goods are going, the size and weight of the parcel, the shipping method and the value of the order.
Free delivery may be available on orders above a set value, during promotions or on certain products. We can withdraw or alter free delivery offers at any time, and they may not cover pre-orders, heavy items, international orders, subscriptions, event products or excluded items.
If an order qualified for free delivery and you then return some of it, we may take the original delivery cost off your refund where what you are keeping would not have qualified for free delivery by itself.
11. Orders Outside the UK
Where we deliver internationally, you must pay any customs duties, import VAT, handling fees, local taxes or other charges that the destination country imposes.
We have no responsibility for delays resulting from customs checks, import restrictions or local postal services.
Making sure that the products may lawfully be brought into your country is up to you. If we think that delivery would break legal, shipping, customs or courier restrictions, we may cancel an international order.
12. Click and Collect
If we offer click and collect, the collection times, locations and requirements will be given at checkout or in your confirmation email.
Before handing over your order, we may ask to see your order confirmation, your name, ID or your payment card.
If your order has not been collected by the end of the stated collection period, we may get in touch to arrange collection, cancel the order, refund it, or put the item back into stock.
13. Cancelling an Online Order
As a UK consumer buying goods online, you will normally be entitled to cancel your order, without giving any reason, within 14 days of the day you receive the goods.
Where your order arrives in more than one parcel, the 14-day cancellation period starts on the day after the last parcel reaches you.
You need to make it clear to us that you want to cancel. You can do so using the contact form on www.anthologybookshop.co.uk or by replying to your order confirmation email.
Once you have told us you are cancelling, you have 14 days in which to send the goods back.
Returning the goods costs you money unless they are faulty or not as described, or we have agreed something different.
The goods must come back in a condition fit for resale, along with any packaging, inserts, extras, bonus items or gifts that came with them. If the value of the goods has fallen because you handled them more than was needed to inspect them, you are responsible for that loss.
14. Items Not Usually Eligible for Cancellation or Return
Certain items, including the following, may fall outside your right to cancel:
- Products that are personalised, customised or made to order.
- Sealed products that cannot be returned once opened because of health protection or hygiene.
- Digital content, once you have agreed to its download, access or streaming starting.
- Event tickets, workshops, signings or dated bookings, where the law excludes the right to cancel.
- Perishable items.
- Gift cards that have been redeemed.
- Mystery boxes, blind-date books or surprise bundles that have been opened, or whose nature means they cannot reasonably be resold.
- Newspapers, magazines or periodicals, other than subscription contracts to which cancellation rights apply.
- Items clearly sold as damaged, imperfect, sample, final sale or clearance, unless they are faulty beyond the condition described.
Your statutory rights are unaffected where goods are faulty, not as described or not of satisfactory quality.
15. How to Return Items
If you want to send an item back, contact us through www.anthologybookshop.co.uk or by replying to your order confirmation email, and give us your order number, your name, details of the item and why you are returning it.
Unless we supply a prepaid return label, you should send items back using a tracked service or one that gives proof of postage. We are not responsible for returned items that are lost or damaged in transit.
Please package returned items securely so that they are not damaged.
Unless the item is faulty, we may refuse a refund or reduce it if the returned goods are damaged, used, missing parts or packaging, affected by smoke, perfume, pet hair, stains or marks, or are otherwise not in the condition in which they were supplied.
16. Refunds
If you cancel an eligible online order inside the legal cancellation period, we will refund the price you paid for the goods you return, together with the standard delivery cost where that applies.
If you chose a delivery option that costs more than our standard delivery, we are not obliged to refund the additional charge.
Refunds will normally go back to the payment method you originally used.
We may hold off on refunding you until the goods have reached us again or you have shown us proof that you sent them back, whichever happens first.
As a rule, we process refunds within 14 days of getting the returned goods, or of getting evidence that you have posted them back.
17. Faulty, Damaged or Wrong Items
If an item reaches you faulty, damaged or incorrect, get in touch as soon as you can and give us your order number, a description of the problem and, where relevant, photographs.
Depending on the circumstances and how long it has been since delivery, you may be entitled to a repair, a replacement, a refund or a price reduction.
We will not treat the following as a fault: damage occurring after delivery, normal wear and tear, accidental damage, misuse, poor storage, or damage from handling the item more than was necessary to inspect it.
Small cosmetic differences, minor printing variations, publisher changes, slight differences in colour, natural variation in paper or page edging, and other small imperfections that are normal in books and printed products will not usually count as faults.
If a product was clearly sold as damaged, imperfect or discounted because of a particular defect, you cannot return it on account of that disclosed defect. Your statutory rights nonetheless remain if it has a different fault.
18. Buying in Person
If you buy in our shop, at events, at pop-ups or otherwise in person, you do not automatically have the same right to change your mind and cancel that online customers have.
We may choose to offer a returns policy for in-person purchases. That policy does not affect your statutory rights where goods are faulty, not as described or not of satisfactory quality.
Any in-store returns policy depends on you showing proof of purchase and returning the item in line with the conditions given when you bought it.
19. Gift Cards and Store Credit
Gift cards and store credit can only be spent with Anthology Book Shop, and cannot be swapped for cash.
A gift card stays valid for two years from the day it was bought or last topped up. You will find the expiry date on your receipt, in your email and on the print-at-home card.
We may not replace gift cards that are lost, stolen, deleted or misused, unless the law requires us to.
Where an order paid for wholly or partly with a gift card is refunded, the part paid by gift card may be returned to a gift card balance or as store credit.
You must not resell, copy, alter or transfer gift cards for value, or use them fraudulently.
20. Discounts, Offers and Promotions
Discount codes, sales, offers, free gifts and promotions depend on availability, and we can withdraw or change them at any time.
Unless expressly stated, discounts generally cannot be combined with other offers, or used on gift cards, subscriptions, event tickets, pre-orders, sale items, shipping charges or excluded products.
Each order may use only one discount code, unless the website allows more.
Where we suspect misuse, fraud, reselling, duplicate accounts, code sharing, technical abuse or a breach of promotional terms, we may cancel orders, take discounts away or suspend accounts.
Free gifts depend on availability and may be replaced or withdrawn. If you return an order that earned a free gift, you must send the gift back unused as well, or we may take its value off your refund.
21. Events, Workshops and Signings
We may sell tickets or places for events, workshops, book clubs, signings, launches, community evenings and other experiences.
When you book, you will be given the details of the event, including its date, time, location, access requirements, age guidance and ticket conditions.
Tickets depend on availability and may not be refundable, unless the event is cancelled or changed significantly, or we agree otherwise.
We may refuse entry to, or remove, anyone whose behaviour is abusive, unlawful, dangerous or disruptive, or which affects the safety or enjoyment of other people.
Where reasonably necessary, we may alter the details of an event, such as the timings, guest appearances, venue, format or schedule. We will contact affected ticket holders where we can if the change is a major one.
Events may be photographed and filmed. Where practical, we will make this clear at the event, and if you would rather not be photographed or filmed, please let a member of staff know.
22. Content Warnings and Reading Preferences
To help customers choose with confidence, we may give content warnings, genre labels, spice levels, trope descriptions, age guidance or other reading notes.
Such information is general guidance only. It can be subjective or incomplete, and may draw on publisher information, reader feedback or our own interpretation.
Deciding whether a book or product suits you, or the person it is intended for, is your responsibility.
We accept no responsibility for distress, offence or dissatisfaction arising from themes, tropes, endings, character behaviour, an author’s choices, spice level, darkness level, or any content that we did not specifically guarantee.
23. Customer Accounts
Our website may let you set up an account. You must keep your login details secure, and you are responsible for everything that happens under your account.
The information you give us must be accurate and kept up to date.
We may suspend or close your account if we believe it has been used fraudulently, unlawfully or abusively, for reselling, to misuse promotions, or in breach of these Terms.
To close your account, contact us. Closure does not change orders you have already placed, or any legal or payment obligations, or records that we must keep.
24. Reviews, Comments and User Content
When you send reviews, comments, photographs, social media tags, testimonials or any other content to us or to our website, you confirm that:
- The content is honest, lawful and entirely your own work.
- You are entitled to submit it.
- It does not infringe the rights of anyone else.
- It is not defamatory, abusive, obscene, discriminatory, misleading or unlawful.
Unless you tell us otherwise, you give us permission to use, display, edit, quote, repost and share that content for our business, marketing, social media and website.
Whether to moderate, remove or decline to publish user content is for us to decide.
25. Community Standards
We want Anthology Book Shop to be a welcoming, inclusive and respectful place for readers.
We will not tolerate harassment, abuse, discrimination, hate speech, threats, intimidation, bullying, sexual harassment, doxxing, stalking, spam, fraudulent behaviour, or any conduct that leaves customers, staff, authors, creators or members of the community feeling unsafe.
If we reasonably believe these standards have been breached, we may refuse service, cancel orders, remove people from events, block website accounts or limit someone’s participation in our community.
26. Intellectual Property
We own, or are licensed to use, all website content, branding, logos, product photography, graphics, text, design, layouts, marketing copy, social media content and other materials made by or for Anthology Book Shop.
Your use of our website is limited to personal shopping and browsing.
Without our written permission, you must not copy, reproduce, distribute, modify, sell, publish, scrape, commercially exploit or otherwise use our content.
Book covers, author names, publisher names, trademarks and other third-party materials stay the property of their respective owners.
27. Third-Party Links and Services
The website may link to third-party websites, payment providers, delivery services, social media platforms or other external services.
We take no responsibility for the content, availability, privacy practices, terms, actions or failures of third parties.
Third-party services you use may have their own terms and policies.
28. Privacy and Personal Data
Our Privacy Policy sets out how we collect, use, store and protect your information, and we handle your personal data in line with it.
By using our website or placing an order, you acknowledge that we may process your personal data for purposes including order fulfilment, payment processing, delivery, customer support, fraud prevention, legal compliance, marketing where permitted, account management and operating the website.
29. Mailing Lists and Marketing
Signing up to our mailing list means you agree to receive marketing emails from Anthology Book Shop.
You may unsubscribe whenever you like, either through the unsubscribe link in our emails or by contacting us.
We may continue to send emails that are not marketing, such as those about your orders, your account, events, legal notices or service updates.
30. Website Availability
We try to keep the website available and working properly, but we cannot guarantee that access will be uninterrupted or free of errors.
For maintenance, security, technical, legal or business reasons, we may suspend, withdraw, update or restrict access to the website.
Except where the law provides otherwise, we are not liable for any loss or inconvenience resulting from website downtime, technical problems, payment provider errors, stock system errors or internet failures.
31. Liability
These Terms do not exclude or limit liability where it would be unlawful to do so. This includes liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, and for breach of your statutory rights.
We are not liable for any of the following:
- Losses that could not have been foreseen.
- Loss of business, profit, revenue, opportunity or goodwill.
- Delays or failures resulting from events beyond our reasonable control.
- Your misuse of products.
- Small differences between the product images and the actual products.
- Subjective dissatisfaction with a book’s content, genre, themes, writing style, ending or tropes.
- Losses resulting from incorrect information you have given us, including mistakes in a delivery address.
Unless the law requires otherwise, our total liability in respect of any one order will not normally be more than the amount you paid for that order.
32. Events Outside Our Control
We are not responsible for any delay or failure in carrying out our obligations that is caused by events beyond our reasonable control. These include postal delays, courier disruption, strikes, severe weather, supplier issues, publisher delays, customs delays, power outages, internet failures, illness, fire, flood, pandemic, changes in law, civil unrest, technical failures and any other circumstances outside our control.
Where such an event affects your order, we will contact you if reasonably possible and take reasonable steps to limit the impact.
33. Reselling and Commercial Use
Our products are sold for personal use, unless we agree otherwise.
If we believe that products are being bought for unauthorised resale, bulk buying, market manipulation, misuse of limited editions, abuse of promotions or other commercial purposes, we may refuse or cancel the order.
34. Complaints
If you are unhappy with your order or your experience, contact us through www.anthologybookshop.co.uk or reply to your order confirmation email.
Tell us your name, order number and contact details, and describe the problem clearly.
Our aim is to reply fairly and within a reasonable time.
35. Changes to These Terms
From time to time we may amend these Terms to reflect changes in the law, our business operations, website functionality, products, services or customer processes.
Each order is governed by the version of the Terms that is in force when you place it.
If you carry on using the website once changes have been published, you accept the updated Terms.
36. If Part of These Terms Is Invalid
Should any part of these Terms be found invalid, unlawful or unenforceable, the other sections will stay in effect.
37. No Waiver
Our failure to enforce a right under these Terms straight away does not mean that we have given up that right.
38. Transfer of Rights
We may pass our rights and obligations under these Terms to another organisation, as long as this does not materially affect your rights.
You cannot transfer your own rights or obligations under these Terms without our written consent.
39. Governing Law and Jurisdiction
The laws of England and Wales govern these Terms.
Where applicable, a consumer who lives in Scotland or Northern Ireland may also start legal proceedings in their local courts.
40. Contact
For customer support, order queries, returns, cancellations, complaints or legal notices, please reach Anthology Book Shop through www.anthologybookshop.co.uk or by replying to your order confirmation email.
These Terms cover Anthology Book Shop, which trades as Anthology Book Shop and operates through www.anthologybookshop.co.uk.
